Kaiori Breath, Oceana and Steeze show their softer side!

This week we wind the tempo right down with some chilled, relaxing dubs.

Dubstep isn’t just about gnarly saw-tooth wobbles… a producer who has been catching my eye with his chilled two-steppy beats, more recently laced with an 80s guitar lead straight out of a dodgy American cop movie, hailing from Northern Ireland, he goes by the name of Kaiori Breathe and churns out quality track after quality track.

His collab with fellow producer Tripwire (look out for their EP being released on the Twenty12 label) blends beautiful piano, distant electric guitar leads, and gorgeous pads all accompanying a garage beat and sweet vocals, worth a listen if you’re into your future-garage.

Check Kaiori Breathe’s Soundcloud for more chilled vibes: http://www.soundcloud.com/kaiori-breathe , included the stunning track “I carry your heart here with me I carry it in my heart” named after one of my favourite poems by E.E Cummings .It’s a very sophisticated style and level of production if you like your deepness.

The two tracks are here:

Also this week is a track by Oceania entitled “In White Noise”-a powerful sub and evil wobbles on a backdrop of echoey percussion, eerie strings and vox and carefully place synth effects. It’s the perfect mix of chilled and filthy dubstep, and if you ask him nicely he may even give you a 320!

And finally this was recently sent to me by a guy called “Steeze”. A melodic piano and sweet garage beat kicks off proceedings, but things turn filthy after the drop and the “Oh yeah” vocal sample, the melodic keys intermittently appearing and a grimey wobble taking over…A mysterious background vocal sample, rhythmic hi-hat groove and nice ambient pads compliment each other well in this track, a very well produced tune.

J Billah and Dub Fiend - Bring you summertime and reggae vibes!

Today I bring you a producer called Dub Fiend. His track “Sunset” has atmospheric summer vibes, the intro being really chilled and ambient, and a soft reverse crash leads us into what you could call the drop, it being made up of gentle breaks and a nice trancey leadand bassline.

The best part of the track is probably the glockenspiel that kicks in around 16 bars after the drop, all the while the breaks, pads, and piano working together to create a beautiful summertime melody. The track is aptly named, because you could listen to it watching the sun set…

Sunset by Dub Fiend

And finally a producer by the name of Jah Billah. His track “Cuss Cuss 2010” can only be described as nu-skool reggae. Very futuristic in its use of synths and effects, it’s an original take on dubstep to say the last. It retains its reggae roots and influences, but this guy has gone all Y2K10 on the reggae genre, with a catchy, bleepy lead synth and danceable melody- this one would certainly go down well on the dancefloor.

RDUBZ R better than yours!

This week I’m going to start off with Rdubz, a producer who sent me half a dozen demo tracks due out for release soon. Here is a review of three of the six tracks he sent me, with the other three coming soon.

The first track I kicked off with was “Creep”. A nice ominous atmosphere on the intro which I always like, then the hats and finally a steady, rhythmic drum pattern with a delayed snare followed. But what grabbed me was the leadbass synth. Retro-style, almost 8bitty, it was refreshing to hear…because I must admit I thought I was going to listen to quite a heavy brostep track with saw-tooth wobble going by the name and the intro. The bassline work was fluid and catchy and an altogether interesting track.

Then probably the pick of the half-dozen, “Dirty Air”, the intro consisting of stabby synths which gave the track a gritty urban feel. The bass was reminiscent of Rusko- “Mr Chips” and again a nicely progressive, catchy bassline and drum pattern with intermittent breaks of the intro synth. The second drop had a nice arped lead which adds to the atmosphere.

“Stonehead” delved more into the brostep territory, with trademark Cockney vocal sample, and a danceable piano to keep the rhythm, supporting an angry distorted bassline. This is more up filth-lovers street.

The tracks are due for release on various labels soon so we’ll keep you posted.

Vital Techniques!!! Drop off a couple mixes!

Vital Techniques is a dubstep duo consisting of brothers Antix and Vecta, who have both gained high popularity within Leeds and the UK’s Drum n Bass scene.

Having both originally started their musical paths through ‘hip-hop’ and ‘grime' , they were introduced to the electrifying sound of Drum n Bass. Having attended various raves at the time, Antix decided that DJing and producing were both things he wanted to pursue so bought his first vinyl decks and production software and started the process of learning.

It wasn’t long before he had gained a reputation in the Leeds scene and got a show on local pirate station Radio Frequency FM. Vecta, the younger brother of the two, had also by this point started learning to DJ and produce, and at just 15 years old had also made it onto the pirate station. Vecta was also included in an ITV documentary about pirate radio and in particular Radio Frequency, and was interviewed about his young success in the local scene.

Both Antix and Vecta worked hard and made their way through the rankings and gained prime-time slots on Radio Frequency, which years down the line they still do to this day.

Then one day, they decided it was time to try something new so joined in the studios and produced their first few dubstep tracks together. Little did they know this would lead onto many others…Vital Techniques was born!

Since, things have been busy for the duo...constantly working on new material in the studio, as well as recently recording a 7 minute Mini Mix with 20 tracks squeezed into it, both their own productions as well as others that have been tearing up dance floors up and down the UK. You can find a link to this mix on their soundcloud at the end of this post

Feel free to check it out, download it, and spread the word!
The latest venture from the duo is the launch of their own Record Label, ‘Second To None Music’, dropping in October! The aim of the label is to release their own material as well as other artists who are representing the scene at this time. Expect to hear more about this from the duo very soon, and catch a track from their first release being played by Brown and Gammon (Circus Records) on their BBC Mini Mix.

The duo's first release, Dynamite, is currently out now on Public Records. Find a link to download this track from their artist page on the labels website at:

Artist Profile: Code:Breaker 4.1

Breaker cut his teeth in jungle drum and bass back in the mid nineties on London's pirate radio scene, and was fast immortalised as the voice of MSXFM  radio station in the multi million worldwide selling and award winning video game 'Grand Theft Auto 3', and the follow up 'Liberty City Stories' - starring alongside one of D&B's most famous innovators, DJ Timecode (Rob Playford, Moving Shadow Recordings).

An engineer as well as a vocalist, stints in the studio since then saw him most notably team up with Crystal Clear and David Boomah to produce Jungle classics, 2 Tone Sound and The Sickness on DJ Hype's Ganja Records,as well as a host of releases on Formation Records, Reformed, Heavy Rotation, Sonix & Buttercuts Records.

Working both the UK Hip Hop and Drum and Bass scenes since the millennium, Breaker honed and crafted his wordsmith skills and has graced many a lineup as part of a number of acts (BC400, The Mighty Avatar, Murderation) as well as solo MC work as Code:Breaker. As an MC, Breaker is known for razor sharp creativeness and inventive, intelligent wordplay – never turning to the many cliches that are the pitfall of too many MC's.

2010 sees Breaker bring all his skills to the fore, combining Production, DJ'ing and MC'ing as the only one man band in the business. Seamlessly bridging the gap between DJ and MC using a custom designed DJ rig for explosive, professional live performances, Breaker obliterates the notion that Dj'ing and MC'ing simultaneously 'cant be done blood'.

A true innovator for future music performance, Codebreaker 4.1 has raised the bar on traditional DJ/MC sets. A flexible, creative 'D&Bcentric' live performance can encompass many styles and genre's from Hip Hop and Reggae, through to Jungle, Dubstep and beyond.

Current residencies in the UK see Breaker working crowds for jungle legends Congo Natty, Ray Keith of Dread Recordings, Flex FM 99.7 London and many more, both as a solo MC and as his one man DJ/MC imprint, Codebreaker 4.1.

Highlights of the year include a bone shaking performance at Glastonbury 2010 on the full to the brim Bassline Circus stage alongside long-time sparring partner David Boomah.
